Device Compatibility
Stay connected effortlessly while travelling. SIMNOVA eSIMs work with most modern smartphones, tablets, and smartwatches used in New Zealand and Australia. Most devices released after 2019 support eSIM technology.
How do I know if my device is eSIM compatible?
Quick Compatibility Check
iPhone
- Open Settings
- Tap Mobile Data
- Tap Add eSIM
If you see Add eSIM, your device supports eSIM.
Android
- Open Settings
- Tap Connections
- Tap SIM Manager
If you see Add eSIM, your phone is compatible.
⚠️ Important: Your device must be carrier-unlocked to use a SIMNOVA eSIM.
To use a SIMNOVA eSIM, your phone must be both eSIM-compatible and carrier-unlocked.
Some devices are locked to a specific mobile network, meaning they can only use SIM cards or data plans from that carrier. If your phone is locked, you may not be able to install or use a travel eSIM.
How to Check if Your iPhone is Unlocked
You can quickly verify this directly in your iPhone settings.
Steps
- Open Settings
- Tap General
- Select About
- Scroll down to Network Provider Lock
Results
- No SIM restrictions – Your iPhone is unlocked and can use eSIM plans from other providers.
- SIM locked – Your device is restricted to a specific carrier and cannot use other networks until it is unlocked.
How to Check if Your Android Phone is Unlocked
On Android devices, you can check by viewing available mobile networks.
Steps
- Open Settings
- Tap Connections
- Select Mobile Networks
- Tap Network Operators
- Turn off Select Automatically
Results
- If multiple networks appear, your phone is unlocked.
- If only one network is available, your phone is likely locked to a specific carrier.
Important Things to Know
- eSIM compatibility does not guarantee that your phone is unlocked.
- Phones purchased with contracts or instalment plans are often locked until the contract ends.
- If you're unsure, your carrier can confirm your unlock status using your IMEI number.
- It’s best to check your device before travelling to avoid activation issues.
What to Do if Your Phone is Locked
If your device is locked to a network provider:
- Contact your mobile carrier.
- Request a network unlock.
- Once unlocked, you will be able to install and use a SIMNOVA eSIM.
For the best experience, we recommend installing your eSIM before your trip and activating mobile data when you arrive at your destination.
How to Check Your Device
- Look in your device settings: On iPhone, go to Settings > Cellular/Mobile Data, then look for "Add eSIM" or "Add Cellular Plan." On Android, check Settings > Network & Internet > SIMs.
- Check the manufacturer’s specs: Search online for your device model and “eSIM support.”
- Contact your carrier; they can confirm whether your device supports eSIM.
