A long layover does not have to mean airport Wi-Fi roulette.
A stopover eSIM is a one-day data plan for the country you are transiting through. You install it before you fly, switch it on when you land, and you have working mobile data for the layover without paying your carrier a full day of roaming. SIMNOVA stopover plans start at A$1.95 / NZ$1.95.
Most long-haul routes out of New Zealand and Australia connect somewhere — Dubai, Doha, Singapore, Hong Kong, Bangkok or Los Angeles. That transit window is exactly when you most need data: to message whoever is collecting you, check whether the next gate has changed, or find the lounge.
Airport Wi-Fi is the usual fallback, and it is usually the worst option available. It often requires an SMS code sent to a number you cannot receive while roaming is off, sessions expire after 30 or 60 minutes, and speeds collapse when a couple of A380s land at once.
What is a stopover eSIM?
It is a short, cheap data plan sized for a layover rather than a holiday. SIMNOVA sells them as "Light" plans: unlimited data, valid for one day, for 20 transit countries.
The plan does not begin when you buy it. It starts when your phone first connects to a network in that country, so you can install it days before departure and it will sit idle until you land.

Is a stopover eSIM cheaper than roaming for one day?
For almost every hub, clearly yes — and by more than it used to be, after a price drop across eleven plans. Only Panama comes out close to the cost of roaming, which we would rather say than have you work out later.
New Zealand carriers charge a flat daily rate the moment you use your phone overseas: Spark NZ$10 a day, One NZ NZ$10 a day per device, and 2degrees NZ$8 a day. Those rates let you use your existing plan's allowance rather than giving you a separate bucket of data.
| Layover | Stopover eSIM | One day of NZ roaming | Difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| Singapore, Istanbul | $1.95 | $8–$10 | Save about $6–$8 |
| London, Paris, Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Madrid | $2.45 | $8–$10 | Save about $5.55–$7.55 |
| Bangkok, Tokyo, Hong Kong, LA | $2.95 | $8–$10 | Save about $5–$7 |
| Vancouver, Toronto, São Paulo, Mexico City | $4.95 | $8–$10 | Save about $3–$5 |
| Dubai, Doha | $5.45 | $8–$10 | Save about $2.55–$4.55 |
| Panama City | $10.45 | $8–$10 | Roaming is slightly cheaper |

Two things the table cannot show. Roaming bills you for a whole NZ calendar day even if you only check your email once in a transit lounge, and on a long-haul itinerary you can cross two of those days in a single journey. A stopover eSIM also leaves your home SIM untouched, so there is no risk of a background app quietly triggering a roaming charge you did not plan on.
Will it work before I clear immigration?
Yes. Mobile networks cover the whole airport, airside included, so the eSIM connects as soon as you land and switch it on. You do not need to enter the country, collect bags or pass through customs for it to work — which is the entire point on a transit stop where you never formally arrive.
How to set one up before you fly
- Check your phone is eSIM-capable and carrier-unlocked on our device compatibility page.
- Buy the plan for your transit country and scan the QR code that arrives by email, while you are on Wi-Fi at home. Full steps are in the installation guide.
- Leave the line switched off until you land.
- On arrival, turn the eSIM on and set mobile data to it. Leave your home SIM on for calls and texts, but turn its data roaming off.
Doing this on hotel or home Wi-Fi matters, because installing an eSIM needs an internet connection — and the moment you actually want one is the moment you have none.
When a stopover plan is the wrong choice
If your layover is under about three hours and you will not leave the gate area, you probably do not need anything. If you are stopping for more than a day, or the transit country is also your destination, buy a normal multi-day plan instead — our standard plans start at A$2.95 / NZ$2.95 for 1GB over 7 days and work out cheaper per day than stacking one-day plans.
Frequently asked questions
What is a stopover eSIM?

For most hubs yes. New Zealand carriers charge NZ$8 to NZ$10 for a day of roaming, against A$1.95 to A$2.95 for most stopover plans. Dubai and Doha are A$5.45, and only Panama at A$10.45 lands close to the cost of roaming.
